Eligibility Requirements

For the Sponsor (You)

  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • 18+ years old
  • Living in Canada (if PR holder)
  • Meet Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for last 3 years
  • No bankruptcy, social assistance, or criminal record
  • Willing to support parents/grandparents for 20 years

For Parents/Grandparents

  • Parent or grandparent of the sponsor
  • Pass medical examination
  • Pass police background check
  • Not inadmissible to Canada (criminal, security, health)
  • Demonstrate genuine intent to settle in Canada

Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) - 2024

Sponsor must have earned at least the MNI for the last 3 consecutive tax years (2021, 2022, 2023)

Application Process

Interest to Sponsor Form

Submit online Interest to Sponsor form during the annual intake period (usually January). IRCC accepts limited applications via lottery.

Receive Invitation

If selected in lottery, receive Invitation to Apply (ITA). You have 60 days to submit full application.

Gather Documents

Collect all required documents: Notice of Assessments (3 years), birth certificates, marriage certificates, police clearances, medical exams.

Submit Application

Complete and submit application package online. Pay government fees ($1,080 per person sponsored).

Processing

IRCC reviews application, conducts background checks, requests additional documents if needed. 18-24 month average processing time.

Decision & Landing

If approved, parents/grandparents receive Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and can land in Canada to receive PR cards.
